Activity: Highgate Cemetery. Tube Stop: Archway (see below for more details). Cost: £8. Hours: 10-5pm
I have a thing for gorgeous old foreign cemeteries. All the different ways people bury and honor their dead fascinate me. Highgate Cemetery is my favorite I've ever visited. It's this gorgeous slightly creepy cemetery where everything is overgrown and caskets have moved. It's a romantic beautiful place where the trees have overtaken many of the Victorian graves. Best of all, it's rumored to be haunted by VAMPIRES. I am thinking these are the actual scary vampires, not the Edward Cullen sort. The only person here you've likely heard of is Karl Marx, but you've already seen plenty of famous dead people at Westminster Abbey.
It's a bit convoluted to get here, but it's worth it. Take the tube to Archway tube stop, High Barnet branch, Northern line. (Don’t go to Highgate tube – it's a much longer walk!). Take the Highgate Hill exit. Then either take a bus (210, 143, 271) two stops to Waterlow Park or walk up Highgate Hill. It’s then a very pleasant five minute stroll through Waterlow Park to the gates.
