How to Bike the Golden Gate Bridge for (Basically) Free

How to Bike the Golden Gate Bridge for (Basically) Free

The first and best thing you should do in San Francisco is get an up close and personal view of the most photographed bridge in the world. Take MUNI to Presidio Transit Center or park in the Sports Basement parking lot. From there, find Sport's Basement and pick up your Basically Free bike rental. This is how it works: you rent the bike for $25 and get that same amount in credit to Sports Basement, which is why it's called Basically Free.

From Sports Basement, pedal up the big hill just beyond Crissy Field. The section between Crissy Field and the actual bridge is a pretty steep hill, so no judgement if you have to walk it! Once you’ve crossed the bridge, make sure to stop at Moore Rd Pier for an uncrowded tourist free view of the bridge. My dad (a 70 year SF Bay Area resident!) showed me this spot and it's my favorite Golden Gate view.

Follow the signs for Sausalito. You’ll go through a big military area with old houses that all look the same. Grab Italian food in Sausalito at Poggio's (777 Bridgeway) and then catch the ferry back to Pier 39. Make sure to check the ferry schedule! The last one is usually at 6:45 pm on weekends and 7:20 on weekdays. It’s $12.50/adult $6.25/5-18 and 65+ and free for kids under 4. Return the bike to the Basically Free bike rental area at Pier 39 near your ferry drop off and either walk or UBER back to your car. Make sure to grab Ghirardelli Square ice cream on your walk back!
